Laughing Leopard is a hipster hostel located in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. If you like BBQs, puppies, and an urban outfitters atmosphere, this is the place for you. Laughing Leopard offers a refrigerator full of beer, fuzzy blankets, and a welcoming community.
I arrived here after climbing Adam’s Peak, one of the most famous mountain treks in Sri Lanka. I was extremely exhausted from my trek. I was running on little sleep and extremely sore muscles. Laughing Leopard offered me exactly was I was needing – cozy accommodation and a beer.
Nuwara Eliya is the train stop about half way between Kandy and Ella. This is a town to seek rejuvenation and outdoor adventure. Nuwara Eliya offers a variety of tea plantation excursions, rustic foggy mountains, and numerous breath-taking waterfalls. This is a great stop in your trip to relax and get away from the fast-paced city vibes.
The first day I caught up on sleep because the beds at Laughing Leopard were some of the best I have found in all of Sri Lanka. This hostel maintained standards of comfort to that of a western hostel. I had been feeling a tad culturally exhausted from traveling at this point in my trip. Something many go through while traveling in a foreign country for an extended period of time. Getting a slight taste of western comforts helped me feel more grounded in the culture whirlwind that I’d been perusing the weeks prior.
Upon feeling refreshed, I was ready to take on the next day. The hostel manager helped me navigate the buses to go scout the best tea plantations in the area. I enjoyed beautiful scenery and even better tea. After that I visited one of the many Hindu temples in the area. This experience was special because on the temple steps I was met by many children who wanted to take photos and practice the English words they knew. After many selfies and yelling ONE, TWO, THREE. I walked back to the hostel for the evening.
Some evenings at Laughing Leopard they offer BBQs for the guest. The staff there help prepare dinner for everyone as the guests socialize and have refreshments. This is a really special time for community and relationship building with other travelers. As a solo traveler, these times are really valuable to me. I feel that it is important to be able to connect and make friends with others along my journey. The night I stayed the hostel it was completely booked. There were so many different people to meet and experiences to share.
More culture exchanges and connects took place the following morning as guests shared a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast together. As everyone ate they made plans together for the upcoming days of their trips. During this breakfast, I found two new pals to journey with to the next city.

I loved my stay at Laughing Leopard Hostel. It has been the best place for me to stay at this point in my adventure. Laughing Leopard is located 163 Nuwara Eliya-Uda Pussellawa Rd, Nuwara Eliya 22200 address. Bookings can be made through their website or AirBnB. Click here to access their website.
